# Reset a Sub-Zero Ice Maker: Lockouts and Power Loss

To reset a Sub-Zero ice maker, restore its water supply, then hold the Alarm key until CFC shows. A display that stays dark means a breaker or a failed part.

---

To reset a Sub-Zero ice maker, start by finding out why it stopped. On a Classic (BI) built-in, a single ice cube icon that flashes with no chime means the control shut the ice maker down because its water valve stayed open too long. Make sure water is actually reaching the unit, then press and hold the Alarm key until CFC (Clear Fault Codes) appears on the display, and the ice maker goes back into service. If no fault is showing, switch the ice maker off at the control panel and back on, or turn off the circuit breaker for a minute and restore it. A panel that stays completely dark through all of that is not a reset problem: either the unit is not getting power or a control part has failed.

## Read the display before you press anything

The little ice cube icon tells you more than most owners realize. On Classic (BI), Designer and IW-30CI models, one steady cube means the ice maker is switched on, and three cubes mean Max Ice is running. No cube at all means the ice maker has simply been turned off, which happens more often than you would think when someone wipes down the touch panel with a damp cloth.

A flashing single cube with no alarm is the flood-protection lockout described above. A dark panel with no lights, no fan noise and no hum is a power question. A normal-looking display above an empty bin usually comes down to a setting, a water supply issue or a mechanical fault inside the ice maker itself. Putting your situation into one of those three groups before you start saves a lot of pointless button pressing.

## Clearing the water valve lockout

The lockout exists to protect your floors and cabinetry. When the valve takes too long to fill the mold, the control assumes something has gone wrong and stops calling for water, so clearing it without finding the cause only sets you up for a repeat.

Work through the supply first:

- Confirm the shutoff feeding the refrigerator is fully open; it is often under the sink or behind a panel in a neighboring cabinet.
- Look for a kinked or flattened line if the unit was recently pulled out or the cabinets were worked on.
- Think back to the last filter change. A cartridge that is not fully seated, or one that is badly clogged, can starve the fill.
- Notice whether other taps in the house have lost pressure, which points to the house plumbing rather than the refrigerator.

Once water is flowing, hold the Alarm key until CFC appears. Give the ice maker several hours before you judge the result, because the first harvest takes a while and the earliest cubes are often small. If the cube starts flashing again within a day or two, the valve or the line feeding it is the likely culprit, and that is work for a technician.

## Settings that stop ice without any fault

Several normal features can make a healthy ice maker look broken.

Sabbath Mode shuts down the ice maker system and the door alarm and holds them off. It also outlasts a power failure: when electricity comes back, the unit returns straight to Sabbath Mode, so a household that used it for a holiday may find the ice maker still idle weeks later. Turning Sabbath Mode off restores normal operation. The 500 Series and the UC-15I have no Sabbath Mode at all, so on those machines it cannot be the cause.

Removing the bin is another. Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) ice makers wait 3 minutes after the bin comes out before doing anything, and Sub-Zero advises switching the ice maker off if the bin will stay out for a long stretch, such as while you wash it. Forgetting to switch it back on afterward is one of the simplest explanations for an empty bin.

Max ice is the opposite situation. On Classic (CL), Designer (DET, DEC) and PRO units, it raises production by up to 30% for a 24-hour period, and some components run faster and sound different while it does. A louder hum during that window is expected and is no reason to reset anything.

## The UC-15I undercounter ice maker

The UC-15I has controls of its own. Its DELAY key pauses ice production for 2, 4 or 8 hours, depending on whether you press it once, twice or three times. Auto Delay, which you program while the unit is off, repeats that pause every 24 hours, but it is lost when the power drops, so after an outage you need to set it again or the machine will keep a different schedule than you expect.

When REPLACE FILTER lights up in red, the unit has counted 8000 ice-making cycles. Fit the new filter, then touch and hold the clean key for 6 seconds to clear the reminder.

If the UC-15I runs but produces nothing, check the two conditions Sub-Zero spells out. Supply pressure has to be no lower than 20 psi (1.4 bar) and no higher than 80 psi (5.5 bar). Room air should be between 50°F and 100°F for the indoor model, or between 50°F and 110°F for the outdoor version. An undercounter machine shut inside a cabinet in an outdoor kitchen on a July afternoon can easily drift past that ceiling.

Power matters as well. The Designer Series Undercounter Ice Maker calls for 115 VAC, 60 Hz on a dedicated 15 amp circuit. Sub-Zero recommends against a GFCI indoors because one can cut power without warning, yet it requires a GFCI when the machine is installed outside. If an outdoor unit goes dark, that outlet and its breaker are the first things to check and reset.

## After a power outage or a tripped breaker

Summer thunderstorms around Nocatee knock the power out often enough that the recovery steps are worth knowing. While the power is off, keep the doors shut. By Sub-Zero’s own estimate, an empty unit with closed doors keeps its fresh food side under 45°F (7°C), and its freezer under 20°F (-6°C), for roughly 3 hours; a well-stocked one holds its cold longer.

When power returns, confirm the display wakes up and the ice cube icon reads the way you left it. Empty the bin, because cubes that partly melted and refroze tend to fuse into a block that can jam the ejector, or the dispenser on models that have one.

If the refrigerator went dark while the rest of the house kept power, go to the electrical panel. A tripped breaker usually rests between on and off; push it fully off, then back on. If it trips again right away, leave it off and arrange a service visit, since a short inside the unit can keep tripping it.

## When a dark display means a failed part

If the breaker is on, other outlets on that circuit work, and the panel still shows nothing, the fault is inside the unit. The likely suspects are the electronic control board or the power supply that feeds it. A lockout that comes back after every CFC reset points instead to the water valve or the supply line. Neither problem answers to more resetting, and repeated power cycling can hide the pattern a technician needs to see.

Crosswater Appliance Service is an independent repair company that works on Sub-Zero ice makers and refrigeration in Nocatee, Twenty Mile, Crosswater and Coastal Oaks. A visit starts with an $80 diagnostic. As a typical range, an ice maker, water valve or supply line repair runs $240–$650, and an electronic control board runs $420–$780; the firm figure comes after diagnosis, once the exact part is known. Our [power and controls checklist](/diagnostics/power-and-controls/) follows the same first stage step by step, and the [ice maker repair page](/service/ice-maker-repair/) explains the service itself.

## What does the repair this guide describes cost in Nocatee?

Flat $80 diagnostic covering the visit and the full diagnostic sequence, credited toward the repair once you approve the work.

Completed work of the kind this page covers has landed between $240 and $780, parts and labor together. The firm figure is written down after the diagnosis, not before it.

| Repair | Typical range |
| --- | --- |
| Diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair | $80 |
| Electronic control board | $420–$780 |
| Ice maker, water valve or supply line | $240–$650 |

Ranges are what this work has cost, not a quote. A range moves with the part version the serial number calls for and with what the cabinet turns out to need.
