**Symptoms this page covers:** Dispenser flow slowing over a period of weeks; Water tasting flat or chalky straight after a filter change; Filter light not clearing after a new cartridge is fitted; A new filter that seems restricted from the first glass; Ice and dispensed water both weakening at the same time; Drips continuing at the dispenser after the glass is removed.

**Usually decided at:** stage 5 of the 6-stage sequence.

A refrigerator water filter is rated in gallons, not in months. The month figure
on the box is an estimate of how long an average household takes to reach the
gallon figure. What matters on your cabinet is what the cartridge is passing
today, which is a thing that can be measured rather than assumed.

## What a filter does and does not do

This distinction saves people money, so it is worth stating plainly. A standard
refrigerator filter is a carbon block. It is built to reduce taste, odor,
chlorine and particulates. It is not a softener, and changing it more often will
not change what is dissolved in the supply — that passes through by design.

What it does do is collect the particulate load, and as it fills it passes less.
The cartridge reaches its practical restriction limit — the point where it is
noticeably slower than it was new — on its own schedule, which may be well
before or well after the date on the label depending on the household. Replace
on flow, not on the calendar, and you will spend less on filters and far less on
misdiagnosed valves.

## A slow dispenser has three possible causes

When flow at the dispenser drops, the restriction is in one of three places,
and they are easy to tell apart in the right order.

- **The filter.** Bypass it or fit a fresh cartridge. If flow returns, the
question is answered in five minutes and costs nothing but the filter.
- **The fill valve or the supply.** A restricted valve seat, a partly closed
shutoff under the sink, a saddle connection nobody has turned in fifteen
years, or a line kinked behind the cabinet when it was last drawn out.
Restriction here shows up in the ice and at the dispenser together, which is a
useful signature: when both weaken at once, look upstream of the split.
- **The dispenser line or the tank.** Slow flow only at the dispenser, with the
ice maker unaffected, puts the fault downstream of the split.

Any competent diagnosis walks that list. We measure flow at each stage rather
than replacing parts and hoping — dispensed volume over a timed run, fill volume
at the ice maker for comparison, and the shutoff and line checked by hand.

## The line behind the cabinet is part of the appliance

On an older installation, as much of this fault family lives in the plumbing as
in the machine. A supply that was teed off during a kitchen refit, a shutoff
that has been partly closed since a plumber visited, a saddle connection that
was never intended to be permanent, or a line pinched when the cabinet was last
pushed back into its opening will all produce the exact symptom pattern of a
failing valve — at a fraction of the cost, and only if somebody looks.

That is also why the cabinet may need to come forward. On some installations it
releases cleanly on its runners; on others, flooring or scribed joinery went in
afterwards. We check before quoting rather than during the work.

## Air, not fault, after a change

A new cartridge that gives chalky or cloudy water for the first few glasses is
almost always air and carbon fines flushing out. Run several gallons through
before judging it. If it is still restricted after that, the cartridge is not
seated, is the wrong part, or the restriction was never in the filter to begin
with — and a filter light that will not clear is a reset issue, not a water
issue.

## Genuine cartridges

We fit genuine OEM parts, including filters. Aftermarket cartridges vary widely
in flow rate and in how well they seat, and one that restricts early produces
exactly the symptom pattern of a failing fill valve. Diagnosing a $40 part as a
$300 one is an expensive kind of mistake, and the cheapest way to avoid it is
not to introduce the variable.

## What the visit involves

The $129 diagnostic is flat and credited toward the repair. On a filter and
dispenser call we measure dispensed volume over a timed run, check the filter
head and cartridge seating, measure fill volume at the ice maker so both sides
of the split are compared, check the supply shutoff and line, and inspect the
valve seat. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered.

If the answer is that the cartridge interval is simply too long for your
household's usage, that is what the report will say, and there will be no repair
to sell.

We are an independent company servicing Sub-Zero refrigeration only. Our
technicians hold EPA Section 608 certification, which is required for
sealed-system work. Completed repairs carry 90 days on labor and 365 days on
parts.
