Start with what a wine cabinet is not. It has no water connection, no fill valve, no ice mold and no filter, so stage 5 of our diagnostic sequence does not apply to it at all and any diagnosis that puts a water fault on one is wrong before it starts. What a wine cabinet does have is a much narrower job than a refrigerator. A food cabinet has to keep contents cold. A wine cabinet has to hold two zones within a few degrees, indefinitely, with a glass door in a Florida house, and without shaking the bottles. That is a harder specification to hold and an easier one to fall out of quietly. ## The two zones converging The most common fault we are called for is not a warm cabinet. It is two zones that have started reading almost the same. A dual-zone unit works by splitting one cooling supply between compartments and controlling how much of it reaches each. When a damper, a small zone fan or the sensor feeding the control loses its calibration, the split stops happening and the cabinet becomes one temperature. Owners usually notice the reds drifting cool before they notice the whites drifting warm. Because that failure has no noise and no alarm, it can run for months. If you keep a cabinet at two setpoints, read both numbers on the display once a month; they are your only instrument. ## Summer drift and where the heat comes from A wine cabinet in an interior wall of a Nocatee house is living an easy life. One built into an island facing a west-glazed kitchen, or into a bar cabinet in a garage-adjacent room, is not. Glass doors are a thermal weakness by design, and the cabinet compensates with duty cycle.
